Literacy and Learning Through Play

Posted by on August 24, 2012

Ohio Twp. Central Children’s Department is pleased to announce a new series of programs, aimed at parents and their young children (ages 18 months-6 years old). The first one will be Monday evening, August 27, from 6:00-7:00PM. Miss Jenny, who is one of our resident early literacy experts, will show parents how they can reinforce literacy skills for their young children through playing games. She will also introduce our “Early Literacy Collection;” books that have activities for parents to use with their young children. Kids will be actively involved in the activities, too!

While she won’t be teaching kids to read or even teaching parents how to teach their kids to read, she will be teaching/demonstrating how parents can play with their kids to develop the early literacy skills they will need when they are ready to learn to read. After a brief introduction from Miss Jenny, the parents and their kids will move around to different play stations to try out the activities, all of which can also be done at home.

Each family will also receive a take-home pack, which has the activities listed on them, so you can do them at home, too! Each month, more cards will be added to your pack.

For more information or questions about the program, call the Children’s Dept. at 812-853-5468, ext. 306 or e-mail lsbruns@ohio.lib.in.us.
