Library Program – Down Memory Lane: Our Own Area Serial Killer, Celebrities, Athletes & More

Written By: Diane - Apr• 05•12

Come in and share your memories or learn about some of the more nefarious and famous “locals” from Ron Eaton, publisher of “Maturity Journal” and author of two books focusing on our local history.  He will speak at OTPL/Central Library/Newburgh, on Wednesday, April 25 starting at 6pm & again at 6:45pm in the Emerald Room.  Eaton will discuss his newest book, “The Best of Maturity Journal” and his other book, “Local Legends: The Stories behind the Headlines”.

The “Best of Maturity Journal” is a compilation of 80 of the best stories in the magazine’s 27-year history that includes two special features – a 3-part series about local weather broadcaster Marcia Yockey and, also “Terror of the Tri-State: The Leslie Irvin Murders”, chronicling one of the darkest chapters of area history – six people were shot to death by the so-called “Mad Dog” killer Irvin in four separate incidents between December 2, 1954 and March 28, 1955.

“Local Legends” is a history of many of the greatest athletes and teams from the area, including the Mattingly brothes, Bob Griese, Gil Hodges and over 100 more.

The program is free and open to the public, and Eaton encourages people to come in and share memories of the people and the times.  Books will be available – but no purchase is required to participate.  At the end of each session, the author will sign new purchases or books that have been previously purchased.

Come in for a trip down memory lane and some good memories and some disturbing.
